Letters and poems [manuscript]. 1922-1986.

1. Letters written to his brother, Ronald, the first at age 14 from the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay, and the last the year before his death. They are family letters, with very little discussion of his career. There are several letters from Ronald to Alan. 2. Unpublished poems written in the 1930s.

Sir Alan McNicoll joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1922, became a Rear Admiral in 1958. He was Deputy Secretary of Department of Defence, 1958-1959; Second Naval Member of the Naval Board, 1960-1961; Chief of the Australian Naval Staff, Canberra, 1965-1968, and Flag Officer Commanding H.M. Carlo Giorgio Domenico Enrico Catani, civil engineer, migrated from Italy to Melbourne in 1876, and joined the Dept. of Lands and Survey. Some of the works under his direction were the draining of the Koo-Wee-Rup swamp, improving the River Yarra, the laying out and planning of the Alexandra Gardens, and the reclamation of the foreshore of St. Kilda.
